After a two week hiatus, the devotions this week are prepared by Pastor
Ludwig. He looks at favorite hymn phrases.

Lord Take My Hand and Lead Me Stanza 1

"Lord, take my hand and lead me Upon life's way

Direct, protect and feed me From day to day

Without your grace and favor I go astray;

So take my hand, O Savior, and lead the way.

She pulled her hand out of mine and wriggled her body with frustration,
she gave me the "evil eye" and stubbornly said, "Me do it!" As if stuck in
the finger with a diaper pin, I flinched with the pain of rejection from my
two year old firstborn and said, "O.K. Aubrey, but stay close to me," as we
walked down the sidewalk of our neighborhood. I wondered if that was the
pain God felt when I all too often demanded to do it my way and on my own
terms.

This wonderful hymn, often used over the last century as a confirmation
hymn, is a simple and humble prayer that acknowledges we cannot do daily
life under our own steam. Instead of thinking that we can solve all of
today's issues and dilemmas, the words direct us to turn to God who is the
source of all that is good. God will take our hand, if we ask, and lead the
way. Today when you are tempted to say, "Me do it," let this hymn verse
redirect you to One whose hand is waiting to take your own.
