Daily Devotion Monday  January 29, 2007

 

The devotions this week are prepared by Pastor Ludwig. He continues to look
at favorite hymn phrases.

 

All Depends on Our Possessing  Stanza 1

"All depends on our possessing God's free grace and constant blessing,

Though all earthly wealth depart.

They who trust with faith unshaken By their God are not forsaken

And will keep a dauntless heart."

 

Ray was not conscious and had not opened his eyes not spoken for a couple of
days when I made the drive up to Saginaw to see my old friend and mentor. I
had been a pastor for five years and he, thirty five. I joined his wife and
daughter at the bedside when the doctor came in and asked Hilda to step out
into the hall. He whispered the news to us, "He has perhaps a day or two,"
and then advised us to not to tell him should he awaken. Hilda turned to me
and asked if we should keep the news from him. I replied, "You have been
married for 35 years, have you ever kept the truth from him before?"

The doctor made a hasty retreat as we re-entered the room and found ray with
eyes wide open. He asked, "what did the doctor say?"  With a courageous love
seldom witnessed by outsiders, she gave him a kiss on the cheek and said,
"Perhaps two days before the Lord calls you home."  Ray looked at me and
said, I believe we should prepare my funeral service. Barry, will be the
liturgist?" I nodded, trying to hide my tears. "Remember, this is a
celebration, I shall be with my Lord!"  Within an hour he was in a coma
again and that night he was dancing with the saints of heaven.

Whenever I sing the hymn above, I remember Ray. His unwavering trust in a
God whom he could not see with his eyes inspires me to this day. Of all the
people I have ever known, his was the most dauntless of hearts.  He believed
and in that believing their was strength and courage and life.
