Daily Devotion Tuesday January 30, 2007

The devotions this week are prepared by Pastor Ludwig. He looks at more
favorite hymn phrases.

Rock of Ages stanza 1

"Rock of ages cleft for me, Let me hide myself in thee;

Let the water and the blood, From thy riven side which flowed,

Be of sin the double cure: Cleanse me from its guilt and power."

Mrs. Schwartz sat in the pew behind our family (we all sat in the same pew
Sunday after Sunday). I used to dread it when I would look up at the hymn
board and see # 376. Mrs. Schwartz did not have a bad voice, in fact it was
rather nice, except when we sang "old 376." She would positively screech
that one at the top of her lungs and well beyond the top of her range. I
wanted to turn around and give her that stare that everyone gave to Mr.
McKenzie on the other side of the church when he let his tenor voice rip on
Beautiful Savior.

One Sunday as we drove home from church I said from the back seat of our
two-tone Ford Galaxy, "Mrs. Schwartz needs to cool it on # 376. She drives
me crazy on that hymn!" My Mother turned in the front seat (pre seat belt
era) and whispered, "When you were a baby, she was in a car accident that
took the life of her husband and baby. She was driving. She always sang this
hymn differently after that.like it was what was keeping her going." I
never complained about Mrs. Schwartz and old 376 again.

When all is collapsing around us, we have hope in a God who is our strong
rock. When our sense of guilt or failure would beat us down, we have a Lord
who brings forgiveness and hope. Whatever today brings, may your heart
screech out old 376 with a confident hope.
