Zion's Daily Electronic Devotions for Wednesday July 11, 2007
As our nation deals with draught and heat waves, I wondered what God might
say to us about water, remembering that water was and still is more precious
than gold in the ancient middle east. (Pastor Ludwig)
Isaiah 43:2
[God says] "When you pass through the waters I will be with you; and through
the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you."
This text bounced through my head and heart as Karen and I paddled furiously
to get back to shore on Lake Missinaibi in northern Ontario. We were caught
in the middle of high winds and waves, with two children in the middle of
the canoe. As we struggled to stay upright and moving forward I kept
thinking, "I should have known better than to put my family at risk like
this!" When we reached shore, Karen and I quietly breathed a prayer of
thanks while our daughters were blissfully unaware of how close we all came
to disaster.
Water brings life and yet it can also be dangerous and deadly. It is like
all of life isn't it? Sunlight brings joy and a sense of well-being, but it
can burn and cause cancer. Love can be beautiful, but when unrequited, it
can kill the soul. Life is, from beginning to end, a glorious yet a risky
business. We don't always make wise decisions. At times we are caught up in
storms over which we have no influence or control. The floodwaters of every
day life can be imposing.
The God who sent his Son to participate with us in that risk and that glory,
promises to accompany us on the journey and be our strength and hope. In the
bliss and in the bluster God grabs a paddle and brings us to shore. Be of
good courage. God in Christ has promised, "I will be with you."
