E-Devotions for Friday July 13, 2007
As our nation deals with draught and heat waves, I wondered what God might
say to us about water, remembering that water was and still is more precious
than gold in the ancient middle east. (Pastor Ludwig)
John 4:13-14
Jesus said to her, "Every one who drinks of this water will thirst again,
but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the
water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up
to eternal life."
As the congregation came out of church, shaking my hand and smiling, "good
morning," I looked at her and asked, "How are you doing?" She responded,
"Is that just a phrase or do you really want to know?" I avowed that I did
and after worship I spent two hours listening to her story and praying with
her. Most of us do not have the direct honesty of that woman. We tell people
that we are fine and we continue on in our isolation and pain. Perhaps we
believe that bearing our own burdens is somehow courageous or maybe we just
don't think that anyone cares enough to listen and be there with us.
In the Gospel story above, Jesus cares. He breaks every social rule of his
time and people in order to care: He talks to a strange woman who is living
with a man outside of marriage and perhaps most scandalous, she is a
Samaritan (sworn enemies of the Jews). There is nothing superficial or phony
about Jesus' relationship with us. You are important to him and there is no
obstacle that can turn him away. He has come to bring living water to your
soul. He is with you even now to bring renewal to your spirit. Let him water
you with hope.
