E-Devotions for Monday July 30, 2007
This week, we will explore Biblically our five senses; touch, taste, smell,
hearing, and seeing. (Pastor Ludwig)
Genesis 8:20-9-1
"Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean animal and
of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And when the
LORD smelled the pleasing odor, the LORD said in his heart, "I will never
again curse the ground because of man, for the imagination of man's heart
is evil from his youth; neither will I ever again destroy every living
creature as I have done. While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold
and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease." And God
blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and
fill the earth."
My grandmother Ludwig smelled of scented powder. She used generous amounts
of oddly-scented powder on her neck and face, at precisely those places
where the nose of a little, loving grandson "hangs out." I remember telling
my Mother that Grandma smelled "gross." I also remember loving her smell.
That smell was laden with love and attention. When she would take me to the
Zoo or to the State fair, the smell went with us. When I received a
birthday card with that smell, it would always have a five dollar bill.
When I close my eyes and remember, I can still smell the love of my
grandmother.
After the flood, Noah offered a whole burnt animal sacrifice to the Lord and
it must have smelled terrible. But Scripture says that to God it had a
pleasing odor. Not because of the smell of the smoke, but because of the
relationship behind it. People who love us have a special and pleasing
smell that brings a sense of well-being and complete acceptance. God has
loved us through his Son who gave his life on the cross as an acceptable and
sweet smelling sacrifice for you. How can you smell good to others today?
