Zion's Daily Electronic Devotions is back after a sabbatical. We thank you
for your patience. This week Pastor Ludwig looks at friendship and friends.
John 15:15
[Jesus said to his disciples] "No longer do I call you servants, for the
servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you
friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to
you."
I had graduated from Seminary and was doing graduate work at Michigan while
doing part-time parish ministry, as much to pay Rackham credit hours as to
fulfill my calling. I had been in school all of my life and somehow in that
process had quietly become an adult, a husband and an almost ordained
minister, yet at age 26 I was still addressing congregants as Mr. or Mrs.
... until one day, Mr. Stuede said to me, Barry, you can call me Bill. It
was at first awkward for me but in that moment Bill had become a friend and
I had joined the ranks of adulthood. We would become life-long friends, and
later as Bill decided to study for the ministry I would become his Old
Testament teacher and he my favorite student (friend).
In our Gospel text, Jesus tells his disciples, I am your friend. Although
God in the flesh, he does not choose to be our superior but instead he
chooses to be our friend. Jesus is our best friend. If something difficult
enters your life do not ask if God is punishing you. A friend would never do
that. Live today in the joy of friendship with our Lord Jesus and be certain
that he is on your side.
