Zion's Daily Electronic Devotions for Wednesday June 27, 2007 (Pastor
Ludwig)

Frederick Buechner

"In the entire history of the universe, let alone in your own history, there
has never been another day just like today, and there will never be another
just like it again. Today is the point to which all your yesterdays have
been leading since the hour of your birth. It is the point from which all
your tomorrows will proceed until the hour of your death. If you were aware
of how precious today is, you could hardly live through it. Unless you are
aware of how precious it is, you can hardly be said to be living at all."

"Gloria," my supervising pastor explained to me, "had a stroke almost 25
years ago and has been basically bed-ridden for all those years. Her
bachelor-nephew takes care of her. He won't win any awards for housekeeping
so brace yourself when you take her communion today." As "green" seminary
intern, I was intimidated by this assignment and frankly feeling just a
little bit sorry for myself. After three months on internship I felt
somewhat disillusioned by this thing called parish ministry. Gloria would in
some ways change my heart about life and ministry.

I picked my way through the yellowing stacks of newspaper in the living
room, past the countless unkempt kitty litter boxes into a small immaculate
room with a southern-exposure window that sparkled with sunlight. On the
wall above Gloria's bed where she lay was a picture of Jesus wearing a big
red heart on his left chest. I introduced myself, "I'm Vicar Ludwig," an ear
to ear smile exposed her picket fence mouth and she almost sang, "This is
the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Welcome to my
world!" I loved Gloria. She taught me about what really mattered; love,
contentment and a true joy for life.

May this be a Gloria day for you! Remember wherever you are and whatever
circumstance you are in, God has gifted you with this precious and
unrepeatable day filled with possibilities.

Psalm118:24

"This is the day which the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."
