Daily Devotion Monday March 12, 2007
I have for some time now thought to write a devotional book based upon the
introductory verses of each book of the Bible. This week walk with me as we
listen to the opening verses of some New Testament writings.pastor barry.
Matthew 1:1
"An account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the
son of Abraham."
After writing this, Matthew goes on to write 28 chapters about the life,
death and resurrection of Jesus "the Messiah" yet in this opening verse he
tells us that it is only a genealogy. I wonder was this an advertising hook,
to get one into the Good News without the reader having a clue? In the first
century, genealogies were as big as March madness is to the American today.
Matthew knew that if he could get the reader into the history behind the
promise of salvation he could lead him into its fulfillment.
We stand on the other side of two thousand years since the fulfillment of
God's ancient promise. We have been born with spiritual silver spoons in our
mouths and are likely to take for granted what the first century people of
God so desperately yearned for, a God who is close at hand; a God who takes
our hand and is personal. This is so obvious to us that we forget the
proximity of God's love. Does God need an advertising hook to get you back
into the story this day? Let it be this, Jesus gave his life for you. When
you are tempted to give up say, "but Jesus died for me." As you struggle
with addiction say, "but Jesus died for me." As you lay you head on your
pillow tonight, say to the darkness, "Jesus died for me."
