Daily Devotion Tuesday March 13, 2007

I have for some time now thought to write a devotional book based upon the
introductory verses of each book of the Bible. This week walk with me as we
listen to the opening verses of some New Testament writings.pastor barry.

Mark 1:1

"The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God."

In a field that seems to have lost all consensus, New Testament scholars
seem to agree that Mark was the earliest of our four Biblical gospels. It
is also the shortest of all the gospels. It appears that Mark subscribed to
the philosophy that it is too easy to lose the forest for the trees. He
gives us the big picture in the simplest of descriptions. In an age of far
too many details we thank you St. Mark.

Mark begins and ends his salvation story in a curious and disturbing
fashion. Rather than say that this "is the good news" he tells us that it
is only the "beginning" of the good news. He concludes his account with the
women running forth from the empty tomb on Easter morning with fear and
wonder and it just ends there. Was he in such a hurry to get this to the
press that he left out all of the post resurrection appearances of Jesus?

Or was he trying to tell you something in this curious and odd ending? "The
beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ the son of God," finds its
conclusion not on Easter morning, but in the lives of those who go running
from the empty tomb with awe and fear.

Could it be that you are a part of the continuing story of God's love and
grace in the risen Christ? Step into the narrative today and be a part of
the good news.
