Daily Devotion Thursday March 15, 2007

I have for some time now thought to write a devotional book based upon the
introductory verses of each book of the Bible. This week walk with me as we
listen to the opening verses of some New Testament writings. pastor barry.

Genesis 1:1-4

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a
formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from
God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light";
and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated
the light from the darkness.

John 1:1-5

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through
him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into
being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light
shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it."

One cannot read the first verses of John apart from the first verses of
Genesis. Whereas the other Gospel writers begin with flesh and blood, John
begins with cosmic creative power. This Jesus is not who he appears to be.
He looks like an average ordinary guy (thank you Joe Walsh) but is in fact
the power behind the cosmos. God spoke, "Let there be." and there was!
Jesus is the word made flesh for you and me.

In my last call, I was privileged to teach 6th and 5th grade religion
in the parochial school. After a class on Genesis and the creation account,
a student came up to me with a picture he had drawn of a swirling spiral
galaxy. Under he had written, "God said, 'Bang' and there it was!" After 10
years it still hangs in my study at home.

Jesus is the "big bang" of creation and of your salvation. This Word
made flesh who was there at the beginning, knows you by name and has chosen
to be one with you in flesh and blood. You have no better friend and
companion today. He shines through whatever darkness may confront you.
