Daily Devotion Tuesday March 27, 2007

As a pastor, I walk the hallways of local hospitals on a regular basis. In
the last years, I have been fascinated by the type of eye contact (or lack
thereof) that takes place as I pass people in those hallways of joy and
sorrow. I have begun to categorize different types of "eyes."

Psalm 121:1 - Hopeful Eyes

"I lift up my eyes unto the hills, from where will my help come? My help
comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth."

We passed on my way into cardiac intensive care and her way out of it.
Seeing my clergy collar she smiled and said, "Good morning, Father." With a
smile I nodded and returned the greeting. I gladly accepted the title and
thankfully received her look that conveyed hope in a place where fear and
uncertainty make their residence. The Psalmist writes about hope-filled
eyes. He lifted his eyes in the midst of the rocky, dry, and lifeless Judean
wilderness and yet was able to hope in a life giving and sustaining God who
would guide and protect him.

As we prepare for Holy Week and Easter, let us lift our hope-filled
eyes to the hill which is called Calvary and see our faithful God who has
chosen to dwell with us. Wherever your heart is today lift up hopeful eyes
and see the presence of your loving God.
