As a pastor, I walk the hallways of local hospitals on a regular basis. In
the last years, I have been fascinated by the type of eye contact (or lack
thereof) that takes place as I pass people in those hallways of joy and
sorrow. I have begun to categorize different types of "eyes."
Psalm 145:14-16 - Dependent Eyes
The LORD upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down.
The eyes of all look to thee, and You give them their food in due season.
You open your hand, and satisfy the desire of every living thing.
She lifted her little daughter out of the wheel chair and placed her in the
family van, carefully adjusting the safety belt. The little girl looked at
her mother with totally dependent eyes and gently said, "I love you mommy."
With tears in her eyes, the little girl's champion kissed her and said, "I
love you right back."
It won't be long before our culture teaches that little girl that dependency
is weakness and that she has to stand on her own two legs in this world. She
will learn the phrase that "God helps those who help themselves" and
"There's no such thing as a free lunch." All lies. All the whispers of the
devil.
If we know anything about God it is as the psalmist writes, that God lifts
up those who are falling and that our eyes look to God for sustenance, both
physical and spiritual. God is gracious and loving. Dependency is not a bad
thing, it is a love thing. God desires our well being. Like the mommy
strapping in her little girl, God says, "I love you right back and even
more!"
